The aim of the Working with Sex Offenders course is to assist workers who are required to develop a relationship, as part of their role, with an individual who has been convicted of a sexual offence and/or is on the sex offenders register, to build that relationship effectively and reduce the risk of manipulation.
The sex offenders notification requirements is commonly known as the sex offenders’ register. This is a register containing the details of individuals convicted, cautioned or released from prison for a sexual offence against children or adults since 1997.
Those sentenced for six months or less are placed on the register for seven years, or three and a half years if under 18. Those cautioned for a sexual offence are put on the register for two years, or one year if under 18.
The training will explore “Sex offender” and “paedophile” . The two terms that are often used interchangeably, but they have vastly different meanings. A sex offender is a person who has been convicted of a sex-related crime, which may or may not involve a person who is considered a child under the law.
On the other hand, “paedophile” is a clinical term describing a person who has a psychological disorder (paedophilic disorder or paedophilia) that causes the person to have a primary or exclusive sexual attraction to prepubescent boys and girls. This term applies whether the person has committed a crime or not, and applies even in cases where the person has not acted upon his or her attraction to children.
Understanding professional boundaries and the risk of manipulation will help keep you safe and prevent a misuse of power imbalance.
This course has been developed by a safeguarding expert and former police officer who led the high risk panel and Multi Agency Sexual Exploitation Panel, supporting the most vulnerable adults in our communities. Milly formally worked for the Sex Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse specialist department and is a child protection specialist. Milly has provided training to care homes and major charities.
Your understanding of the course is tested though multiple-choice questions and you will receive a CPD accredited certificate, on the successful completion of the course.
